Experience the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont

Greensboro, VT

A quaint country Vermont township centrally located in Vermont's Northeast Kingdom on Capsian Lake, Greensboro, VT, is a home for the arts, the outdoors and quiet country living.

A favorite of tourists, including the lake Chief Justice William Regnquist,  the township attracts many year round for quiet getaways, winter cross country skiing and summer lakefront recreation.

Greensboro Barn, renovated and dating back more than a century ago, is a gallery and shop presenting the works of Jennifer Ranz and serves as a function facility for weddings and other special gatherings.

Circus Smirkus, a Vermont favorite, is located in Greensboro, VT,  with its camp and residency providing circus instruction alongside a great travelling show under the "big top".

Greensboro is also home to Jasper Hill Farm, a maker of cheeses found in supermarkets and gourmet grocery markets in various parts of the United States, along with Hill Farmstead Brewery vote the "Best Beer in the World" by Ratebeer. Video Newsclip

Greensboro, VT hosts free Sunday evening concerts on Caspian Lake during the summer months.

Caspian Lake

"The nearly-800-acre lake is one of the few lakes in the area with a town beach and public boat launch that allows water skiing. Those living on the lake stress their appreciation for peace and quiet, however, and remind visitors that there are loons in residence that must not be disturbed. Somehow it seems very appropriate that, for 65 years, lake residents and visitors have rowed to the dock of a local cottage for a Sunday evening recorded concert of classical music."

The Towns Origins

Greensboro was chartered in 1781. The town was named for Timothy Green, one of the original charter recipients and an original landowner under the charter. However, there is no evidence that he ever visited the town, and his land was sold for non-payment of taxes a few decades after he received it. Only three of the original proprietors settled in the town; most likely, the others were land speculators who sold their land to others or let it be sold at tax sales when buyers could not be found.
