Quimby Country Resort

Vermont’s oldest sporting camp and original family summer camp. Established in 1894.

Lakefront cottages

Set on more than 1,000 forested acres in the heart of Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom, Quimby Country is perfect for anyone who wants to step into a quieter place with plenty of active and restful activities alike.

Our Lodge and lakefront cottages are the only buildings on 60-acre Forest Lake. The crystal-clear waters of 1,200 acre Big Averill Lake are a 10-minute walk through a forest crisscrossed with hiking trails.

  • 19 cottages with one to four bedrooms and full baths
  • 9 cottages have full kitchens, all have refrigerators, wood stoves, and porches overlooking Forest Lake
  • Linens and towels provided along with daily housekeeping
  • Free use of all boats, paddle boards, and clay tennis court
  • Unusual, wide natural sandy beach area on Big Averill
  • Library and wireless Internet in Lodge
  • Pet friendly, free fly fishing lessons

Family Summer Camp

From July 15 to August 26, our rates include three family-friendly meals a day, with a full breakfast, lunch in the dining room or in a picnic basket, and four-course dinner. Weather permitting, evening meals usually include both a Northeast Kingdom barbecue and a downhome Lobster Bake.

We also provide counselor-led morning and afternoon activities for youngsters between four and 12. They might hike up Averill Mountain, picnic at Sandy Beach, or, on rainy days, play crafts and games in our lakefront Rec Hall. In the evenings, our counselors lead family activities such as square dancing, charades, or Pictionary.

Early and Late Summer & Gall Foliage Season

In fall and spring, guests are on their own for meals, except for a complimentary continental breakfast. But they can stay in one of the nine cottages with kitchens. And all our other facilities are available, including the main Lodge with its fireplace, library, and chessboard, and wide assortment of board games and puzzles.

Of course, our rates are lower in early summer and fall. Some kitchen-equipped cottages are available for rent by the week for as little as $750.

Fishing & Hunting

You’d expect a place with cottages named after trout flies to have good fishing. Quimby Country sits amidst some of New England’s most productive and historic fishing waters.

Forest Lake’s rainbow and brown trout are just off your cottage porch. Big Averill Lake, renowned for its bunker lake trout, is a 10-minute walk through the woods. Bass, pike, pickerel, and landlocked salmon swim in nearby waters.

The only thing that comes close to the fishing in Quimby Country is the abundance of world class big and small game hunting on nearby state and federal lands and privately owned commercial timberland.

Quimby Country is one of the best areas for grouse and woodcock hunting with enough varied cover for the most ardent upland hunter.
