Local Farms in Vermont's Northeast Kingdom
The Northeast Kingdom of Vermont, as a part of the Green Mountain State, has rolling green pastures with soil rich in nutrients and moisture from rainfall that allows for an abundance and variety of vegetables to be grown.
The Northeast Kingdom is also geographically located along a cusp of weather patterns, allowing for extreme lightening storms and changes in temperature during summer and winter. Nitrogen is released into the soil from the intense lightening storms that occur during severe showers and adds to the fertility of the soil.
Throughout the region there are many farms that raise livestock, produce milk, and grow and abundance of vegetables, despite the short growing season. The area commercially produces milk for well known food makers such as Stoneybrook, Hood, Land O' Lakes, and Cabot, as well as corn for cattle feed and human consumption.
The Northeast Kingdom is also home to many sugar maple trees that produce a sugar water. The harsh winters bring forth sugar water during the coldest part of winter. The sugar water is then reduced during the cooking process to make maple syrup. Local maple sugar farms sell their maple syrup and products locally and in stores in many parts of the United States.
In mid summer look for raspberries, blueberries, strawberries, blackberries and peas, among the many others mid-summer vegetables. In the fall, corn and apples are harvested, along with squash, pumpkin and tomatoes. Some dairy farms sell milk products such as cream and cheese to the general public. You'll also likely find goat's cheese.
